Tower Of London Remembers 2014 ; I was lucky as I was in England in 2014 for the 100th anniversary. It was a huge project that started in London. I am in love with poppies ( I have a tattoo of one on my ankle ). Poppies have long been used as a symbol of sleep, peace & death; Sleep because the opium extracted from them is a sedative & death because of the common blood-red color of the red poppy in particular. It is a powerful flower who looks so fragile. It is rare, beautiful in the nature & can’t be turn into a bunch of flowers.
The famous poppy was out in this late year 2014. 888,246 ceramic poppies progressively filled around & on the tower between July to November 2014. The evolving installation Blood Swept Lands & Seas of Red, marked the centenary of the outbreak of the First World War. The beautiful ceramic poppy was created by “Paul Cummins” & “Tom Piper”. A big team made the poppies. Each was unique & it was a great ambition ; you can watch here how they “made the poppies“.
Christmas 2014 – 2015 – 2016 ; Christmas is a big event in England & everyone is into it. The lights, musics & mood are already present end of November. Everyone get started to create the festivities around it. In London, you can find the famous streets with new lights every year. So many people come at this period of the year to enjoy the full streets of people, cars & London buses in a chaotic environment. It is unique & fantastic to discover the new lights in a cold winter.
The first year 2014, I discovered a beautiful London with the “Music” theme. Not to be missed for Christmas lights, the streets to go to are “Covent Garden”, “Regent Street”, “Oxford Street”, “Bond Street”, “Trafalgar Square” & “Carnaby Street”. All very different with magnificent lights. You will of course, discover other places less famous on your way hopefully.
The next year, 2015, the theme was “Party”. The streets are full of people of every country. It is a special event to come to “London”, even if it is expensive, to see the lights & the shops in the famous streets. It is freezing but people stay late at night to just enjoy the environment of it.
The last year I went to “London” for Christmas, the theme was about “Powerful words”. Still in “Carnaby Street” where we found the best spot to take a photo of the unique atmosphere. This time, when we went into town, it was raining & very cold. Not a lot of people was outside. A strange feeling to be close to alone in the streets in this period of the year.
Museums & Art Galleries ; Of course, in London, when the weather is not great ( so quite often ! ), there are fabulous places to go & hide from the rain. I did a little selection of my own preferences but of course, there are plenty more to discover in “London”. The “British Museum” in Great Russell St, the “V&A” in Cromwell Rd, the “Natural History Museum” in Cromwell Rd too & the “National Gallery” in Trafalgar Square. There are all free & amazing. Of course, for me, the sections of photography & portraits painted are the best..
For the Art Galleries, it is the same. A lot of them are in “London” but there are my favorites. “Barbican Art Gallery” in Silk Street is 10£ for the entrance but it is worth it to go have a look in, the “National Portrait Gallery” in St Martin’s Place & “Saatchi Gallery” in Kings Road is worth it too & free.
Graffiti Streets ; My boyfriend surprised me when he bring me to a tunnel next to a train station in “London” where a lot of Graffiti are on the walls of it. I am a Graffiti’s lover & this tunnel is a bit mysterious even if people use it to go to where ever they need to go. But I kind of feel special to be in this kind of places. It is a short tunnel, the Graffiti changed a lot.. I will then, let you discover & explore this town & try to find it.
Famous tour ; If I had to choose one district in “London” who is the most interesting & crazy, I will choose “Camden Town”. A long street with lots of different shops with lots of things that you don’t need but you are going to buy anyway. A crazy style & design of the shops ; a little help – Look up ! It is a variety of cultures expressed in this district without any judgement of any kind. It is peaceful but can be also very busy by all the tourists coming to discover this famous place. The loud music coming from some shops, the very dark entrance of some of them, when you are not sure to go in ; all of it, is “Camden Town”.
You have of course the famous places to go & visit in the center as “Trafalgar Square”, “Buckingham Palace”, the “London Tower” with the “Clock”, the bridges, the architecture on the other side of the river. The subway & tourists buses are very helpful & easy to find your way through the town. London is not my favorite place in England but it is a dynamic town where lots happen. A beautiful & enriching culture & mood.
